Economic Stimulus Package

100 Dollar Bill

So, the government has decided to enact an Economic Stimulus package. The package calls for $600 for individuals and $1,200 for couples with an additional $300 for each child for those who pay taxes. I’m guessing we won’t get anything for our kid yet, but the $1,200 extra back of our own money sounds nice.

The checks are scheduled to come out in June or so if the vote goes through this week as expected. It has a wide range of support from both sides of the aisle as both Democrats and Republicans know that if they were to look like the party opposing this, they could pay dearly in November.

I, for one, don’t necessarily agree that the economy is in dire straits. I certainly don’t think the government should get involved in the housing issues out there as the market will correct itself in time. But I won’t be sending back my check either. 🙂

Agree. If I get a check, I will not send it back either. But I have to wonder who will eventually pay the $100B+ bill? Another interesting speculation I heard is how much $100B+ would go to fixing/improving/widening many of our overcrowded highways. Wonder what the payback of that option would be in terms of jobs for Americans and regained productivity/quality of life by not being tied up as much in traffic each day.

And further more by having to pay for all of it eventually aren’t they then taking out of the economy what they are claiming to put back into the economy now? Money doesn’t just appear so it has to come from somewhere and that always is the taxpayer. It boils down to a small redistribution of wealth that plays well during elections.

You have indeed hit the nail on the head!

I second the sentiment of not sending it back, but it always (ok, twice now) makes me uneasy when the government says, “Hey here a little somethin’ for you and the misses to spend in our store. No, no, don’t worry about it. We’ve got plenty and besides it will only help business.”
